DATE SET FOR THAKE/RUNCIMAN MEETING IN WESTPORT

Minister of Natural Resources to attend

(Brockville) – A public meeting to discuss concerns in the Rideau lakes area dealing with fishing regulations, concerns about poaching and the activities of fishermen from outside the region fishing in the area at night, has been set for Saturday, April 12, from 1 pm to 3 pm, at Rideau Vista Public School (9921 County Rd 42 Westport).

Westport Mayor Bill Thake and Leeds-Grenville MPP Bob Runciman will co-host the event and they indicated that representatives from the OPP, the Westport and Area Outdoors Association, the Ontario Chinese Anglers Association and possibly one other Chinese fishing organization, plus the Ministry of Natural Resources-including the Minister, Donna Cansfield – will be attending.

“The minister approached me in the legislature last week and indicated an interest in attending” said Runciman. “I think it’s great she’ll be there to hear the concerns in person and to provide the Ministry perspective.”

The Mayor and MPP organized the meeting to provide an opportunity for residents of the Rideau region and visiting fishermen to “better understand” each other and to address long-standing concerns regarding poaching and the depletion of fish stocks.
