WAKE UP AND LOOK AT THE JOB NUMBERS MCGUINTY
Runciman says ‘don’t worry, be happy’ approach to economy must end
(Brockville, ON) –Leader of the Opposition Bob Runciman pointed to job numbers released this morning and said they should be a wake-up call to Dalton McGuinty to change his approach to the economy.
“Ontario’s economy is shedding high-paying manufacturing jobs while this government dithers,” said Runciman. “Our economy is too important to continue this approach. Next week’s economic statement must mark an end to Dalton McGuinty’s ‘don’t worry, be happy’ song about the economy.”
According to job numbers released this morning, while the rest of Canada gained 43,000 jobs in November, Ontario lost 7,200 jobs pushing the unemployment rate up 0.2 percent to 6.2 percent. Most of the job losses were in the manufacturing sector (4,900) which has lost almost 160,000 high-paying positions in the past two years.
“The job numbers are beginning to reflect the reality in Ontario’s economy,” said PC Economic Development Critic Ted Chudleigh. “Many of us have been ringing the alarm bells for a long time now – when is Dalton McGuinty going to realize – it’s the economy, stupid?”
