ATTORNEY GENERAL DROPS THE BALL ON HOMOLKA
Attorney General Bryant should have fought to keep restrictions on Homolka
(Queen’s Park) – McGuinty’s Attorney General Michael Bryant dropped the ball on the Homolka appeal by failing to pull out all the stops to ensure the restrictions on Karla Homolka remained in place, Progressive Conservative House Leader Bob Runciman said today.
“Enough is enough with Karla Homolka, she’s had one good deal after another from the justice system,” said Runciman. “The restrictions placed against Homolka were reasonable and deserved and the Attorney General failed to make every effort to ensure they stuck.”
McGuinty Liberal Michael Bryant failed to request status for Ontario at the appeal hearings in Quebec. During the hearings Ms. Homolka brought in an expert witness to testify that she posed no risk and Ontario failed to counter this testimony. Homolka can now travel freely and un-monitored, to any community in Canada, including St. Catherines, the home of her victims
“Just as he has been on gun crime, the Attorney General was missing in action on this appeal,” said Runciman. “He was front and centre when the original application was made but it was just another example of the McGuinty Liberals being focused on flashy photo ops and no real action. It is a shame because we had the opportunity to make an impact on this decision by sending representation from Ontario but the Attorney General failed to capitalize on that.”
In the Legislature today, Runciman also chastised the McGuinty Liberals for failing to fund the French and Mahaffy families attendance at Homolka’s appeal hearing and cover the expenses of their lawyer, Tim Danson. “Their record is abysmal and a large part of the responsibility for today’s decision has to lay at the McGuinty Liberals’ doorstep,” said Runciman.
