LABOUR BILL BOUGHT AND PAID FOR?

Liberals handed $200,000 from unions benefiting from legislation.

Toronto – Ontario P.C. House Leader Bob Runciman (MPP, Leeds-Grenville) today called on the McGuinty government to withdraw controversial labour legislation after revealing that unions benefiting from the bill donated $200,000 to the Liberals at an unadvertised fundraiser in Vaughan Tuesday night.

“The optics on this are incredibly shocking”, said Runciman. “We’re just about to begin public hearings on legislation that allows construction unions to do away with secret ballots in union organizing drives, and the same unions hand over $200,000 as a very fat thank you to the Liberals”.

“It unfortunately gives the impression of inappropriate influence in the development of legislation and in the view of my Party, irreparably stains the legitimacy of provisions that benefit the donors” asserted the MPP.

Holding this very secret fundraiser on the eve of hearings was, at the least “very stupid” according to Runciman and fuels voter cynicism about the honesty and integrity of all politicians.

Runciman called on the Liberal government to withdraw the legislation or remove the union-benefiting provisions during upcoming public hearings of the legislation.
