LIVING WILL (POWER OF ATTORNEY KITS) AVAILABLE
AT RUNCIMAN OFFICE
BROCKVILLE - Considerable
interest in living wills has evolved from news
reports concerning the recent death of Teri
Schiavo in the United States. The 41-year-old
woman, in a virtual vegetative state for more
than 15 years, died several days after a feeding
tube was removed from her body.
Numerous court proceedings examined the issue
of what the woman would have wanted had she
left written instructions. Her husband testified
that his wife had told him before she became
ill that she did not want extraordinary measures
taken to keep her alive if her condition was
terminal.
Bob Runciman, MPP for Leeds-Grenville, said
the case illustrates the importance of citizens
making their feelings known on what treatment
they want if they become incapacitated.
For a number of years the Ontario Government
has provided Living Will/Power of Attorney Kits
that contain all the forms and instructions
citizens require to prepare a legal document
outlining the care they want if they become
incapacitated.
These kits are available at Runciman’s
Brockville office at 243 Perth Street or by
calling 342-9522 (1-800-267-4408 toll free).
