MNR RESPONDS TO REQUEST FOR PERCH PROTECTION

BROCKVILLE – Under new regulations announced by the Ministry of Natural Resources, the yellow perch population in the St. Lawrence River in this area will be protected following recommendations made by Leeds-Grenville MPP Bob Runciman in the fall of 2003.

Runciman presented a petition bearing 534 names organized by Brockville fisherman Frank LaFlair to the Ontario Legislature just prior to the provincial election in the fall of 2003. Local fishermen were concerned with the devastation caused by the popular fish being harvested by commercial fishermen from outside the area.

Runciman asked the Ministry of Natural Resources to implement a program that will guarantee the survival of perch for future generations. Local fishermen suggested the Ministry has adopted a daily limit of 50 perch per person as suggested by local fisherman and Runciman.
