TAXPAYERS URGED TO SPEAK OUT
… ON PETITIONS
BROCKVILLE - Two petitions
circulating around the province of Ontario as
the result of the recent budget announced by
the McGuinty Liberal Government have the enthusiastic
support of Bob Runciman, MPP, for Leeds-Grenville.
“I have been overwhelmed by the reaction
of ordinary taxpayers to this budget, one of
the most punishing I have ever experienced,”
said Runciman. “I can understand their
frustration. This budget increases taxes dramatically,
especially to people of modest incomes, and
also denies important health services to vulnerable
citizens through de-listing of OHIP eligibility.”
Runciman said it’s extremely important
for citizens of Ontario to make their feelings
known to Premier Dalton McGuinty and his Liberal
Government.
“One of the best ways to do this is through
signing petitions,” said Runciman. “I
am prepared to present these petitions in the
Legislature every day, for as long as it takes
for this government to come to its senses.”
The first petition notes that since the budget
violates the provisions of the Taxpayer Protection
Act, the Legislative Assembly of Ontario should
order a referendum allowing the taxpayers of
Ontario to decide on whether or not they will
accept the proposed tax increases.
Under the Taxpayer Protection Act, new taxes
or tax increases must be supported by a province-wide
referendum.
Runciman says the McGuinty government should
not be allowed to rescind the law; it should
be forced to follow the law, as the Liberals
pledged to do during their election campaign.
The second petition calls on the Ontario Government
to reverse the de-listing of eye exams, chiropractic
and physiotherapy services, and restore OHIP
funding for these important and essential services.
