INQUEST NEEDED IN CHARLEBOIS MURDER - RUNCIMAN

Toronto – Conservative House Leader and former Solicitor General, Bob Runciman (M.P.P. Leeds-Grenville) today called on the Liberal government to call an inquest into the death of 15 year-old Rene Charlebois of Mississauga, a suspected victim of accused serial killer and sexual predator Douglas Moore.

“Moore is the chief suspect in the deaths of three young men”, said Runciman. “The fact that a convicted serial pedophile was able to live in a community, mix with teenagers, babysit and reside across from a school without anyone knowing of his history, should set off alarm bells.”

The veteran M.P.P. and longtime justice minister suggested that an inquest into Charlebois’ murder could lead to positive recommendations, dealing with questions like the need for new criteria to designate dangerous offenders and for strict requirements compelling police to notify the public of a sexual predator in their midst.

“The Christopher Stephenson inquest into his murder by a sexual predator led to many positive initiatives, including Ontario’s Sex Offender Registry”, Runciman explained. “An inquest into Rene’s death could achieve similar positive results.”

Runciman raised the issue with Community Safety Minister, Monte Kwinter during today’s Question Period and Kwinter declined to answer the question.

“Kwinter opted to play politics instead of deal with a serious issue”, charged Runciman. “It’s truly unfortunate that the Minister can’t get beyond partisan politics in the interests of public safety.”
