MCGUINTY LIBERALS REFUSE TO TRACK SEX OFFENDERS – RUNCIMAN

TORONTO – The Ontario Liberals’ refusal to fund a pilot program to track sex offenders in the Toronto area is “unconscionable” according to Tory House Leader Bob Runciman (MPP Leeds-Grenville).

Runciman announced the program in June of 2003 as then Minister of Public Safety and Security. The announcement followed the abduction and murder of 10 year-old Holly Jones and the subsequent revelation that approximately 700 sex offenders registered under Ontario’s Sex Offender Registry lived in a concentrated area of Toronto.

“The project was designed to assist the Toronto Police to keep track of sex offenders, to make sure that they were living where they said they were living, to strengthen action against non-compliant sex offenders and to provide specialized support to victims,” explained Runciman.

“Toronto has an inordinate number of sex offenders within its boundaries and this Liberal failure is a slap in the face of Toronto families and an insult to the memory of Holly Jones and jeopardizes the safety of Toronto neighbourhoods,” charged Runciman. “Repeat sex offenders are among the most dangerous of offenders and the Liberals just don’t get it.”
