FOOD TAX FOLLOWS SCRIPT OF PREVIOUS LIBERAL GOVERNMENT

TORONTO - A plan by the Liberal Government to start taxing food items under $4 reminds Bob Runciman, Leeds-Grenville MPP, of a previous Liberal Government, that of David Peterson 1985-1990.

“The Peterson Liberals convinced voters they were going to make government more efficient but by the end of their term they had raised taxes 33 times and had doubled government spending,” said Runciman in a statement read in the Legislature Thursday.

He said the McGuinty Liberals promised voters during their recent campaign that they would not increase taxes and would hold the line on spending.

“We’ve witnessed the McGuinty Liberals rescinding tax relief measures, including one for seniors, and go on a $3 billion spending binge, in less than months,” Runciman said.
“Now they’re planning to strike again with a soup, salad and sandwich tax that hits Ontarians who can least afford it.

“In my riding of Leeds-Grenville this tax grab will hurt far and wide. It will hit the Coffee Club at King’s, the seniors at Burger King and the folks grabbing toast and coffee at Jon’s or George’s Restaurant at Tincap. It will also penalize seniors having coffee and snacks at Lockett’s Tim Horton’s in Prescott, or the Maple Leaf Restaurant in Gananoque and the Rapid Valley Restaurant in Lansdowne.

“This fat cat Liberal spending will only serve to feed the insatiable spending appetite of the Ontario Liberals. It must be stopped and the Ontario Conservative Party will do everything possible to make this happen,” pledged Runciman.
