MCGUINTY GOVERNMENT INDIFFERENCE THREATENS SECURITY

TORONTO – Ontario Conservative House Leader Bob Runciman today called on the Ontario Liberal government to pay heed to the evidence flowing from the 9/11 Commission in the United States, and not “fob off” security responsibilities to the federal government.

“I was shocked by Premier McGuinty’s indifference at the arrival, in Ontario, of the Khadr family, avowed supporters of Al Qaeda,” said Runciman.

“McGuinty essentially said ‘this isn’t our problem’ when it clearly is. The vast majority of law enforcement is provincial and Ontarians have the right to know what steps are taken when known sympathizers of Al Qaeda are on our doorstep,” charged Runciman.

Runciman, a former Public Security Minister, is concerned that the Liberal government is not learning from the testimony before the 9/11 Commission. “It’s increasingly clear that 9/11 could have been prevented. The alarm was sounded and nobody listened. McGuinty seems to be adopting the same approach.”

Runciman asked the Minister of Community Safety if the government was checking on whether or not the Khadrs’ had a history of losing passports and provincial documents such as driver’s licenses, but received no answer.

“This is scary stuff, and it’s clear that the security of our province is not a priority for the McGuinty Liberals,” a concerned Runciman said. “If we are the target or in any way connected to a future terrorist attack, the McGuinty Liberals will bare a significant degree of responsibility.”
