ADDITIONAL
FUNDING HELPS REDUCE CRIME
BROCKVILLE _ Two local agencies
and seven area municipalities have been sent cheques
totalling almost $148,000 to cover special projects
from the Ministry of Public Safety and Security,
Leeds-Grenville MPP Bob Runciman announced today.
Brockville and Area YMCA-YWCA will
conduct two programs for seniors with the help
of a $20,000 grant. An educational program partnered
by the Brockville Police Service and 401 Electric
will increase seniors’ awareness and knowledge
of personal and home safety. A fitness component
will focus on strength training to increase cardiovascular
capacity and muscle mass.
The Safe Community Coalition of
Brockville and District will use a $19,900 grant
to organize crime prevention sessions covering
topics such as personal safety, home/property
security, fraudulent financial scam awareness
and road awareness.
A grant of $15,000 has been approved
for the Brockville Police Service’s Project
Nighthawk, a street level enforcement project.
Newly acquired officers will use rental vehicles
and work to uncover involvement of known youth
suspects for criminal offences. Additional grants
of $24,015.94, $8,969.22 and $7,500 are designed
to help pay for other initiatives such as increased
staff, purchase of new equipment to detect impaired
drivers on both city roads and the river, and
to increase the presence of bicycle patrols.
Prescott Police Service will use
a grant of $8,100 to upgrade its video/audio interview
room and $1,376.63 to help cover the costs of
its RIDE program. The town will use $10,980.70
to offset costs of increased police staff.
A grant of $16,016 will assist Gananoque
to cover the costs of additional police service
and $1,376.63 will go towards the RIDE program.
Also receiving funding assistance for RIDE programs
are the Augusta Police Services Board, $3,159.88;
Township of Rideau Lakes, $5,489.50; Township
of North Grenville, $1,355.40; and the Village
of Merrickville-Wolford, $4,986.27.
The grants reflect the commitment
of the Ontario government to support the efforts
of small municipalities to combat criminal activity.
