ADDITIONAL FUNDING HELPS REDUCE CRIME

BROCKVILLE _ Two local agencies and seven area municipalities have been sent cheques totalling almost $148,000 to cover special projects from the Ministry of Public Safety and Security, Leeds-Grenville MPP Bob Runciman announced today.

Brockville and Area YMCA-YWCA will conduct two programs for seniors with the help of a $20,000 grant. An educational program partnered by the Brockville Police Service and 401 Electric will increase seniors’ awareness and knowledge of personal and home safety. A fitness component will focus on strength training to increase cardiovascular capacity and muscle mass.

The Safe Community Coalition of Brockville and District will use a $19,900 grant to organize crime prevention sessions covering topics such as personal safety, home/property security, fraudulent financial scam awareness and road awareness.

A grant of $15,000 has been approved for the Brockville Police Service’s Project Nighthawk, a street level enforcement project. Newly acquired officers will use rental vehicles and work to uncover involvement of known youth suspects for criminal offences. Additional grants of $24,015.94, $8,969.22 and $7,500 are designed to help pay for other initiatives such as increased staff, purchase of new equipment to detect impaired drivers on both city roads and the river, and to increase the presence of bicycle patrols.

Prescott Police Service will use a grant of $8,100 to upgrade its video/audio interview room and $1,376.63 to help cover the costs of its RIDE program. The town will use $10,980.70 to offset costs of increased police staff.

A grant of $16,016 will assist Gananoque to cover the costs of additional police service and $1,376.63 will go towards the RIDE program.

Also receiving funding assistance for RIDE programs are the Augusta Police Services Board, $3,159.88; Township of Rideau Lakes, $5,489.50; Township of North Grenville, $1,355.40; and the Village of Merrickville-Wolford, $4,986.27.

The grants reflect the commitment of the Ontario government to support the efforts of small municipalities to combat criminal activity.
