LIBERALS TREAT KILLERS AS CHILDREN

TORONTO – The Ontario Liberal government’s plan to transfer responsibility for violent young offenders to a new Children's Ministry is a slap in the face to victims in the Province according to former Solicitor General Robert Runciman, the Conservative MPP for Leeds-Grenville.

The Liberal’s Children’s Minister, Marie Bountrogianni, has indicated that the government plans to transfer responsibility for young offenders from the Corrections Ministry to her new ministry by the end of the year.

Runciman described the plan as “naïve and dangerous social engineering” by the Liberal government.

“To believe that 16- and 17-year-old sexual predators and killers should be treated as children belies a Liberal mindset that all young offenders are victims of their environment and need coddling instead of punishment,” charged the veteran MPP.

“The reality is that many of these young offenders are vicious and unconscionable criminals and treating them as children only re-victimizes the people who’ve suffered from their frequently horrific acts,” said Runciman.

“This initiative was not a part of their election platform nor was it included in their Throne Speech,” said Runciman and he urged the Liberal government to consult with police officers and victims’ organizations before moving ahead with this “ill thought-out” plan.

“Police and victims are intimately familiar with youth crimes and they deserve a voice in this decision,” asserted Runciman.
