Tenders Called for Second Phase
of Correctional Centre
BROCKVILLE Five Ontario
construction companies have been invited to
submit tenders for the second phase of construction
of the St. Lawrence Valley Correctional and
Treatment Centre.
Bob Runciman, Leeds-Grenville MPP, said tenders
from general contractors must be submitted before
3 p.m. Thursday, February 6.
The second phase of the project involves construction
of new additions to three of the existing units
and major renovations to three others to accommodate
a 300-bed correctional institute including kitchen
and laundry facilities. Also to be constructed
is a two-storey building to accommodate 50 remand
beds.
The contract will include fully integrated
communications, life safety, and electronic
and physical security systems.
Originally the cost of phase two was estimated
at $35 to $40 million.
The first phase of the project _ a new 100-bed
secure treatment unit and renovations of three
existing wards for a 44-bed forensic unit _
is nearing completion. Occupation of these buildings
is expected to commence in April 2003.
Pre-qualified companies invited to bid on the
project are: Eastern Construction Company Ltd.
of Toronto, Bondfield Construction Company Ltd.
of Concord, PCL Contractors Canada Inc. of Nepean,
Buttcon Ltd. of Concord and EllisDon Corporation
of Ottawa.
“I am excited RFPs (Requests for Proposals)
have been called on the second phase,”
said Runciman. “This maintains the momentum
created by the first phase and keeps the total
project on schedule.”
When completed, the St. Lawrence Valley Correctional
and Treatment Centre will provide at least 650
jobs.
Runciman said planning for the centre is progressing
and he sees a bright future for the innovative
project. The treatment centre has been described
as a Mental Health Hospital inside a Corrections
facility and will offer a wide range of treatment
services to prisoners sentenced to less than
two years in jail.
Prospective contractors will visit the site
in mid-January to discuss the requirements of
phase two.
Operation of the centre involves two ministries
_ Public Safety and Security and Health and
Long-Term Care.
