Runciman Petitions for End to Gun Registry
BROCKVILLE Enough is enough.
Bob Runciman, MPP for Leeds-Grenville, has
started a petition again calling for the federal
government to abandon its wasteful and ineffective
long-gun registry program.
Runciman has been a vocal opponent of the program
since it was first announced and led the charge
of the Ontario government against its implementation.
On the heels of Auditor General Sheila Fraser’s
report that registry costs are now approaching
$1 billion, Runciman believes it is important
for Canadians to urge the federal government
to stop wasting their money.
Originally, the federal government stated the
long-gun registry could be implemented for about
$2 million. That cost is now almost $1 billion
and the majority of Canadians have not registered
their firearms.
The Runciman petition has been circulated throughout
Leeds-Grenville and is available at his constituency
offices both in Brockville and Kemptville.
He is concerned the federal government is siphoning
money from worthwhile projects to keep the registry
going even though there is no conclusive or
verifiable evidence that the registry is preventing
gun crime or keeping guns out of the hands of
criminals.
“I urge the federal government to shut
down this program and invest future dollars
in programs that will have a real impact on
getting guns out of the hands of criminals,”
he said.
